Cruise tourism is gaining momentum in the UAE as Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah have been adopting drastic steps to attract big players of the industry, experts say.

All three emirates have been making significant investments in infrastructure to support cruise tourism facilities and services in the country. Abu Dhabi has erected a new tented cruise terminal at Mina Zayed, Dubai is reshaping Port Rashid and Sharjah is focusing on Khorfakkan to attract around 700,000 cruise visitors during this season.

Dubai will take the lead in total cruise visitors as it is expected to welcome 475,000 passengers at Port Rashid during this season. The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, or DTCM, forecasts a steady growth for the next four years with 625,000 passengers by 2015, a 38 per cent increase over 2010 figures.

Realising the potential in cruise tourism, DP World is expanding Port Rashid cruise terminal facilities to continue its leading position as the largest cruise centre in the Middle East. It will expand the current facilities by the end of 2012 to cater for as many as five cruise ships at one time, against its current capacity of accommodating only two ships.

Each evening, hundreds of people head to Heritage Villages created in Al Shindagha and The JBR Walk in Dubai Marina to watch the rich Emirati heritage and culture unfolding before their eyes while taking time out to try out the best of authentic Emirati cuisines amidst the colourful and festive sights.

A desire to taste the truly local food is one strong reason that draws them to visit the sprawling venues during the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF-2010) which runs until February 28.

“I got here everything I wanted to learn about the arts and culture of the emirate and tried the authentic Emirati cuisines prepared by local women. I now knew for sure why the history is full of stories praising Arabian hospitality. But for the Heritage Village, I would have not known this vibrant facet given the cosmopolitan composition of Dubai,” said Mark and Julie, a British couple who walked down their hotel room in Dubai Marina to watch the winter evening festivities.
Mr. Khalid Ali bin Gharib, Head of DTCM’s Organizing Committee for DSF-2010 Events, said: “Dubai Shopping Festival is an excellent opportunity to recreate Dubai’s rich cultural traditions and this year our special events highlight the country’s ancient history. Cuisines are a big draw with the visitors, especially from the Western countries. Through the Heritage Villages, we have been successful in bringing our time-honed culinary delights to the world.”
A recent report from Mintel recommends Dubai as a new hot location for UK food lovers. Emerging gastro-tourism hot spot Dubai is also one of the countries topping the Post Office Travel Services’ Holiday Money Report for travel money value.

One of the highlights of the culinary tourism programme is the live preparations of cuisines that visitors can watch and go on trying out one dish after another – a bit of learn-while-you-eat concept. The Emirati women who cook the dishes and sell for reasonable prices are too enthusiastic to explain about their open-air kitchen offerings.

The Emirati dishes have been passed down from generation to generation and remained an integral part of the local community’s social and cultural scene. Over the years, some of the dishes have either come under the influence of or left a lasting impression on the cuisines from other regions.

In the traditional Emirati cuisine, rice, meat and fish are used a lot in the preparation of several dishes. Al Harees and Al Machboos are popular local dishes. There are a number of traditional dishes served during different occasions.

Al Harees, which is made mainly from meat and wheat, is a popular treat during special occasions such as Ramadan, Eid and weddings.

Al Machboos, which is also called Al Makboos, has red meat as its main ingredient (which can be replaced by chicken or shrimp) and rice.

Popular dishes also include:
Al Muhammar bil dibs: Rice cooked with dibs, which is a sweet extract derived from dates.
- Al Thereed: Bread mixed with meat gravy.
- Al Qurs Al Mafrook: Round dough is poured into a clay pot and placed inside a specially prepared hole in the ground. It is later mixed with ghee.
- Al Reqa’aq: It is made from soft unleavened dough that is flattened and baked on a hot iron plate.
- Al Muhala: Similar to Al Reqa’aq bread with egg spread on top.
- Al Khameer: Flour mixed with date paste and sugar is baked over burning coal and kept overnight.
- Al Chebab: Made from flour, sugar, milk, eggs and water.
- Al Sago: Al Sago is a dessert made up of wheat mixed with ghee, sugar and cardamom.
- Al Balaleet: A kind of pasta made with sugar, eggs, ghee, onions and cinnamon.
- Al Jareesh: Al Jareesh is made of “Borghol”, which is a kind of crushed wheat.
- Batheetha: Batheetha is a popular traditional dessert made of date paste, flour and ghee. The best time to make Batheetha is during the winter.

Other famous Emirati dishes are Al Chami, Al Logimat and Mathrouba.

The Heritage Village, created by DTCM on the lines of a similar facility in Al Shindagha, is a big draw with the residents of Dubai Marina and surrounding residential zones, 75 per cent of whom being Westerners.

Banader Al Turath exhibition is showcasing exhibits collected from at least five sites in the emirate, including Sarouq Al Hadeed, a rich archaeological site situated 100 kilmetres south of Dubai in a sand dune area and discovered by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Only a select number of artifacts discovered from the site during excavations since 2001 have been kept on display. Exhibits have also been sourced from other archaeological sites located in Al Sufouh and Al Qusais.

It has been established that Sarouq Al Hadeed flourished during the 1st millennium BC as an industrial center manufacturing bronze and iron products in addition to gold and silver jewellery. Stretching 13.75 square kilometers, the finds here date back to the Neolithic Period (7000-4000 BC) and the first millennium BC.

From the Sarouq Al Hadeed, the archaeological teams recovered huge quantities of bronze tools, grinding stones, carnelian beads, rings and fragments of soft stone vessels.

The excavations also led to the discovery of large settlements engaged in copper production.

Copper ore, slag heap, furnace fragments, copper ingots, large number of grinding and crushing stones found at the site, suggested that the site was one of the ancient copper-smelting villages in the region.

The department has been utilizing the DSF right from its inception to showcase emirate’s rich cultural and traditions. This year, our special events will highlight and document the country’s ancient history.

Emirates, the international airline of the United Arab Emirates, on Monday added an extra daily connection between its home base of Dubai and the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, bringing the total number to 21 weekly, non-stop flights.

The service has been established in recognition of the demand for flights to and from Malaysia and Emirates’ deep commitment to serving the Malaysian market.

Richard Jewsbury, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Far East and Australasia, said: “Emirates has always been committed to Malaysia. This increase in flight frequency follows strong and increasing demand for flights not just from business travellers, but leisure travellers as well.

“We are now offering further access to numerous Emirates destinations around the world. The triple-daily flights will benefit our customers, stakeholders and our business, while boosting Malaysian tourism, underscoring the country’s role in Emirates’ Far East network.

“Our partnership with Malaysia goes back to October 1996 when we launched our first service here, via Dhaka, and 10 years later we began a weekly non-stop service, and here we are today with a total of 21 weekly non-stop flights between Kuala Lumpur and Dubai.”

The additional flight, EK408, will depart Dubai daily at 02:40 hours, arriving in Kuala Lumpur at 13:30 hours. Its return flight, EK409, will depart Kuala Lumpur at 09:45 hours the following day, to arrive in Dubai at 12:45 hours.

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing’s (DTCM) representative office for the UK and Ireland has been presented with a trophy for being the Best Tourist Board at the Travel Weekly Globe Awards held in London recently.

This is the first time that DTCM has bagged this award beating destinations like Australia, Barbados, Spain, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK

The London-based representative office has also been presented with an ‘Investors in People’ Award in recognition of excellence in managing, developing, training and motivating people in an organization. DTCM is the only National Tourist Board in the UK and the only organization with in the Tourism and Leisure sector within London to be bestowed with this award.

Investors in People recognition is an international endorsement by a professional UK body that sets a level of good practice for improving an organisations progress through its people.

Mr. Eyad Ali Abdul Rahman, DTCM Executive Director Media Relations and Business Development Division, said the awards reflect the hard work and commitment of the DTCM employees and the quality and service standards that it follows in all its operation and customer services.

He said the awards were a shot in the arm for the department which has been aggressively marketing and promoting Dubai in the overseas markets, including the UK which ranks top on the list of tourist source markets. The awards is a matter of great pride for all of us in DTCM as reflects the success of our aggressive marketing and promotional drive for strengthening Dubai tourism industry and creating better image of Dubai in overseas markets, he added.

Mr. Ian Scott, Director of DTCM UK and Ireland office, received the award recently in London on behalf of the DTCM in the presence of over 1000 senior travel industry professionals in attendance.

In the UK, there are many awards ceremonies, but three of them – TTG Travel Awards, British Travel Awards and Travel Weekly Globe Awards – stand out in terms of importance and genuine industry recognition.

Late last year, Dubai was voted the “best destination for Middle East and Africa” at the Irish Travel Trade News Awards, while the second award from the Travel Weekly recognized the travel trade training programme conducted by DTCM in London.

He said: “Prior to 2009, DTCM UK and Ireland office had not won any of these accolades. This awards season, we have won all of them. This is because of the hard work of everyone at DTCM and the significant changes that we have made in the last two years to the way in which we work with the travel trade.”

The Louis Vuitton Trophy which gets under way on 13th November 2010 in Dubai is expected to put wind in the sails of the UAE tourism industry.

The Louis Vuitton Trophy is one of the most coveted events in sailing and Dubai joins established premier regatta venues, including Auckland, Sardinia and Hong Kong as 2010 hosts.

Paul Cayard, Chairman of the World Sailing Team Association and skipper/strategist of Team Artemis, said: “I have been sailing in Dubai on several occasions. The conditions are ideal, the course is next to the shore and the atmosphere is exciting. DIMC is a fantastic host and I am sure our event here will open many eyes to this fantastic racing venue.”

Saeed Harib, President of the UAE Marine Sports Federation and CEO of DIMC, which will host the race, is delighted to be helping the growth of the sport in the region.?

“Dubai was host to the Emirates Team New Zealand Pro Am Series in 2006 and Alinghi and Victory Challenge boats during the winter of 2007,” said Harib. ?

“With the Louis Vuitton Trophy, DIMC and our partners Emirates Airline are continuing that relationship and in doing so creating a new platform for the development of modern sailing in the region.”

Yves Carcelle, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton, said: “Louis Vuitton has been present in Dubai for more than 10 years. In 2010, we are thrilled to maintain this relationship through a great sailing event, while reinforcing the age-long Dubai tradition for regattas.”

The Louis Vuitton Trophy – which is split into two five-day rounds, followed by semi-finals and the finals run over two days each – will mark the start of the Sea Dubai Watersports Festival, under the patronage of HH Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The festival – now in its third year – will feature: the Dubai Shamaal World Surf Ski Championship; Oakley Riot World Wakeboard Tournament; UAE National Day Watersports Parade; Mina Mile Swimming Competition; Open Water Swim; Jet Ski Competition; Traditional 43ft Dhow Sailing Championship; and finishes on 11th December with the final round of the Class One World and XCat Powerboat World Championships.

The Trophy will be held at Mina Seyahi, the home of Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) next to the Palm Jumeirah, while Emirates Airline – a leading sponsor – will be flying in many of teams and their armies of support staff, as well as race officials and spectators from around the globe.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman DIMC, and Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group, said: “This is a real coup for Dubai. We are honoured to be part of this fantastic event which has rapidly emerged as a renowned spectacle of sport followed by millions around the world”.

“As well as thrilling spectators both here and on TV, it will consolidate Dubai’s status as a venue capable of hosting major international sporting events. Emirates has a great affinity with sailing and it is exciting to be strengthening our commitment to the sport further by supporting a race which will bring the world’s finest sailors to Dubai”.

The event that will feature on-shore entertainment and a host of other activities – is also expected to put wind in the sails of the UAE tourism industry.

Businesses throughout the UAE are expected to benefit after the organisers of the 2009 Louis Vuitton Pacific Series reported that the 14-day festival injected US$12 million (Dhs 44 million) into the Auckland economy.

The blossoming of the airline’s 23rd route into Europe will bring much awaited news in The Netherlands. The daily, non-stop service from Dubai will be operated with a combination of 777-200LR and 777-300ER aircraft, boasting a three-class configuration and the newest version of ice, the passenger revered in-flight entertainment system. Emirates, with its exquisite Private Suites, will be the only airline offering First Class accommodation on the route.

This is the fourth new destination to be announced this year by the Dubai-based carrier. Durban and Luanda were both launched in October and Tokyo was recently announced with a start date of 28th March 2010.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline & Group, said: “We are extremely pleased to announce a new service into Europe at this time and I’m sure it’s a development that will be welcomed with open arms in The Netherlands. Amsterdam is already an important offline market for Emirates and we know there is significant passenger traffic heading from Amsterdam to Dubai and onto Africa, the Indian Sub-continent, Asia and the Far East.”

Sheikh Ahmed added: “This is also a major freight hub and one of the world’s renowned flower centres. Emirates has served The Netherlands as a freighter destination for fifteen years and currently offers six 747-400 freighter flights a week between Dubai and Amsterdam. The daily passenger flight will allow us to bolster our cargo offering by making use of the belly hold capacity.”

Starting 1st May next year, EK 145 will leave Dubai each day at 0825hrs and arrive in Amsterdam at 1330hrs. From Amsterdam, EK 146 departs at 1530hrs, arriving in Dubai at 2359hrs.

The new European service comes on the back of exclusive lounge openings in Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Manchester and extra frequencies to Rome, building up to a double daily in February.

During December, Emirates will take delivery of two further A380s, which will be deployed to Seoul from 14th December and Paris two weeks later.

Last month, the carrier announced half year net profits of Dhs 752 million (US$205 million), representing a 165 percent increase compared to Dhs 284 million (US$77 million) for the period ending 30th September 2008. During the latest results period, the airline carried over 13 million passengers, in excess of 700,000 tonnes of cargo and made an estimated direct contribution of Dhs 10 billion (US$2.72 billion) to the UAE economy.

flydubai, Dubai’s first low cost airline, is set to expand its network in Africa with the announcement of flights to Djibouti from 01 September 2009.

The new service, FZ601, will operate three times per week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, departing Dubai at 08:00 and arriving in Djibouti at 10:15 local time. The return flight, FZ602, will leave 45 minutes later at 11:00 and arrive back in Dubai at 15:15 local time.

One way fares to Djibouti from Dubai will cost from AED 650, including all taxes and one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 10 kg, and will be available for purchase from the website (flydubai.com), call centre (04 301 0800) and travel agents from today.

Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer of flydubai, said: “Djibouti is an important trading destination with established commercial links with Dubai, most notably through DP World, which operates the Port of Djibouti.

“There are very few direct flights from Djibouti to Dubai, so we anticipate strong demand for the flydubai service from both the business and leisure markets.”

With a population of just half a million people, Djibouti is roughly half the size of Abu Dhabi, with a land mass of 23,000 km2 encompassing desert, highlands and plateaus. Djibouti is a republic which was formed in 1977, when the country gained independence from France. The national languages are Arabic and French.

Bordered by Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, Djibouti has a long history as a trading port and is strategically located on the Gulf of Aden.

Although it is not well known as a tourist destination, Djibouti has much to offer the leisure traveller. Scuba enthusiasts can explore the pristine marine life, with trips to remote offshore islands and reefs. Deep sea fishing is popular, with catches regularly including swordfish and marlin.

Land based adventures include an off-road excursion to Lake Assal, the world’s third largest salt water lake and Africa’s lowest point at 150 metres below sea level, or a picnic by Lake Abbe, one of the region’s largest flamingo colonies.

A Djibouti dignitary said the new route will bring enormous benefit to Djibouti nationals and expatriates living in the country:

“Our ties with the UAE and Dubai are incredibly important as our country becomes a gateway to Africa in the same way that Dubai is regarded as the entry point to its own region,” he said. “The flydubai service brings us closer to many more destinations and makes our country more accessible – it will bring new visitors to boost tourism and is excellent news for everyone who lives and works here.”

The flydubai model is simple, with customers paying only for the services they want to receive. The ticket price includes all taxes and one piece of hand baggage, weighing up to 10 kg, per passenger.

Passengers have the option to purchase checked-in baggage in advance at just AED 40 for the first piece and AED 100 for the second, weighing up to 32 kg, subject to availability. Checked baggage at the airport is also strictly subject to availability and passengers are advised to book online early to secure the space, as only pre-purchased baggage can be guaranteed.

A nominal payment of AED 5 allows customers to select their seat and just AED 50 secures the extra legroom positions. Bookings can be changed for a small fee, plus any difference in the fare, and food and drink can be purchased on board.

flydubai operates from a modernised and enhanced Terminal 2 on the north side of Dubai International Airport.
